Grassroots Momentum After Hon. Rasaq Ibrahim Olamilekan (RIO) Declares for Lagos State House of Assembly, Surulere Constituency II

SURULERE, LAGOS — April 9, 2026 —

Hon. Rasaq Ibrahim Olamilekan, the immediate past Executive Chairman of Coker-Aguda LCDA, popularly known as RIO, has officially declared his intention to contest for the Lagos State House of Assembly seat representing Surulere Constituency II.

The declaration, held on Saturday, March 21, has sparked significant grassroots momentum across the constituency.

Supporters, community leaders, and youth groups gathered in large numbers to witness the formal transition of the tested local administrator into state-level legislative politics.

A Proven Track Record of Development
Hon. Olamilekan enters the race with a robust administrative pedigree. During his tenure as Council Chairman, he was widely recognized for his "inclusive governance" model, delivering projects that cut across ethnic and political divides. His achievements include:
Infrastructure & Health: The reconstruction of the Orile-Iganmu Primary Healthcare Centre and extensive road and drainage repairs.

Social Welfare: A six-month sustained palliative program following fuel subsidy removals, which provided food and financial aid to over 12,000 vulnerable residents, including widows and the elderly.

Youth Empowerment: Positioning himself as a symbol of youth inclusion, etc.

A Vision for Security and Peacebuilding
A cornerstone of RIO’s public service has been his proactive approach to public safety. As a Patron of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in Southwest Nigeria, he has been a vocal advocate for the "maintenance culture" of security equipment.
His tenure saw the institutionalization of monthly security meetings with DPOs and the provision of operational vehicles for local police formations. Notably, he successfully brokered peace in Orile-Iganmu by inaugurating an Enquiry and Peace Taskforce Committee to resolve recurring street clashes, emphasizing that "sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of security."

Legislative Ambition
In his declaration speech, Hon. Olamilekan pledged to translate his executive experience into impactful legislation. His vision for Surulere Constituency II focuses on:
People-oriented laws and improved infrastructure funding.
Enhanced access to quality education.
Robust community-based security frameworks.
"Buying equipment is not enough; we must make deliberate provisions for maintenance and community engagement to ensure long-term safety," Hon. Olamilekan stated. "My campaign is driven by direct engagement and a commitment to delivering measurable outcomes for every constituent."

With a blend of administrative experience, party loyalty, and deep grassroots appeal, political observers view RIO as a formidable contender capable of reshaping the legislative landscape of Surulere.
